How to Play Klondike Solitaire Turn 3

Setup

Klondike Solitaire Turn 3 uses the same tableau layout as the classic game. Deal 28 cards into 7 columns — the first column gets 1 card, the second 2, and so on up to 7 cards in the seventh column. Only the top card of each column is face-up. The remaining 24 cards form the stock pile.

Objective

Move all 52 cards to the 4 foundation piles. Each foundation is built by suit in ascending order from Ace through King. The game is won when every card sits on its correct foundation.

Rules

  1. Draw three cards at a time from the stock pile to the waste pile. Only the top card of the three is playable.
  2. Build tableau columns in descending rank with alternating colors (e.g., red 9 on black 10).
  3. Only Kings may be placed on empty tableau columns.
  4. Move Aces to the foundation as they become available, then build up by suit through King.
  5. Groups of face-up, properly sequenced cards can be moved together between tableau columns.
  6. When a face-down card is exposed in the tableau, it is automatically turned face-up.
  7. When the stock is exhausted, flip the waste pile over to form a new stock. You may cycle through the stock unlimited times.

Klondike Solitaire Turn 3 Strategy Tips

  1. Track the order of cards in the waste pile. Since you draw three at a time, knowing the sequence lets you plan which cards will become accessible on future passes through the stock.
  2. Think three draws ahead. Before playing a card from the waste, consider whether the next draw will expose a more valuable card that you might need.
  3. Prioritize uncovering face-down tableau cards over building foundations early. Revealing hidden cards opens up more possibilities and prevents getting stuck.
  4. Be cautious about moving cards to the foundations too quickly. A card on the foundation cannot be used for tableau building, and in Turn 3 you need every available card for sequencing.
  5. Use empty tableau columns strategically. Only clear a column when you have a King ready to place, and prefer Kings that will help uncover the most face-down cards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Klondike Turn 3 harder than Turn 1?

Yes, Klondike Turn 3 is significantly harder than Turn 1. The win rate drops by roughly 10% because you draw three cards at a time and can only play the top card of the three. This limits your access to cards in the stock pile and requires more careful planning.

How many times can you go through the stock in Turn 3?

In most versions of Klondike Turn 3, including Pure Solitaire, you can go through the stock an unlimited number of times. When the stock is empty, the waste pile is flipped over to form a new stock and you can continue drawing.

What is a good strategy for Klondike Turn 3?

Key strategies for Turn 3 include tracking card positions in the waste pile, planning three draws ahead to access buried cards, prioritizing moves that reveal face-down tableau cards, and being selective about which cards you move to the foundations early on.
